Book Review ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’

“Behind every trial and sorrow that He makes us shoulder, God has a reason.”

Life has been so crazy but in the meantime, I did read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and can I just say, I love this book and I love this author. My friend at work actually lent me this book and told me that if I liked The Kite Runner I would love this book as well. What I did not realize is that I actually  already read this book about ten years ago.. I honestly just forgot (oops!). As soon as I got about ten pages in I immediately realized my oversight, but Hosseini's writing is so descriptive and beautiful you can't help but dive deep into his words and into the compelling world he creates before you.

The story of two women, Mariam and Laila, living in Afghanistan between 1960s and early 2000s is so heartwarming, tear jerking, and astonishing in a way that one can not help but become completely absorbed in their lives. It is a story of survival, strength, and kindness between two women in the face of pure destruction and terror.  I cannot fathom what it would be like to grow up with the possibility of bombs falling on you, or being married off at the young age or having to live in constant fear for your well being from your own husband. But the ending is surprisingly hopeful despite the sadness these women face.

One of my favorite quotes from the book:

"A woman who will be like a rock in a riverbed, enduring without complaint, her grace not sullied but shaped by the turbulence that washes over her."

While this is a fiction book, there is truth in its pages. There is such a sadness and hatred in our world and it is so frustrating to think how many woman struggle with domestic abuse even in our own country. Prior to covid I had requested to volunteer at the Naples Shelter for Abused Women & Children. I was only going to help in their little local shoppe but with covid they have had strict regulations as to when they can bring in new attendees. In the meantime follow the link below if you want donate, volunteer or learn more about local shelters in your own cities.
