In high school reading was not just a hobby of mine it became a necessity. I inhaled books as if it were a George Orwell story and they would become enflamed and gone forever. As I have gotten older, started working, and allowing the daily distractions of my life to seep in through its cracks, it seems as if my priorities shifted and sadly Netflix on my phone replaced a book and flashlight under the covers at night. Before I turned 30 it was my goal to read 52 books in one year. The very next day my friend C, who had listened to me rant and rave about this during one of our lunches hours, had completely read my mind and understood my desire yet utter frustration of trying to prioritize reading again. She came up to my desk and simply laid down three books saying this will get you started.

I think it was the bright yellow cover that drew me to You are a Badass by Jen Sincero, and can I just say this book is everything. There are so many truths we come up with about ourselves, sometimes, actually most of the they are not kind and they are not even true. Sincero takes a very friendly, colloquial approach in her writing that almost shocks you as if you were reading texts from a friend, BUT it works. I can do this, I am a badass, I do want to believe that I can achieve anything I truly put my mind, body, and spirit into desiring.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

In reality I didn’t end up reading 52 books before I was 30, I think I read about 12 BUT I did end up getting pregnant and quitting the job I hated, and I am working towards creating a life that I love everyday. Now my days are spent with my baby, writing on my blog, and living the life I only dreamed of years ago. This book has a lot to thank for that. Many of us live our limitations not our dreams and this book completely changed my mindset with what I want to achieve in life. This book is for anyone who is struggling in a job they hate or a relationship they aren’t sure about and take what Sincero spells out so sweetly but firmly You Are A Badass!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't feel enough, or starts projects or ideas but doesn't finish them, or doesn't understand why they are stuck in a job they hate. This book is encouraging, witty, and the truth. Read it and reread it, we are all amazing in our own way and we let the every day monotony get in our path we fail to see and showcase how amazing each of us truly are.
